Microsoft is introducing a new customization feature for the Copilot key, allowing Windows 11 users to remap the key to launch apps other than the Copilot AI assistant. Introduced initially on newer laptops and keyboards to promote Microsoft’s AI-powered Copilot, the key can now be reconfigured to launch other MSIX-packaged apps, ensuring they meet security and privacy standards.

This update is part of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4225, available to beta testers, and represents a significant shift in how users can interact with their keyboards. The ability to remap the Copilot key addresses concerns from users who questioned the need for a dedicated key solely for an AI assistant they might not frequently use. Users can personalize their experience by assigning the key to their preferred applications, adding flexibility to their workflow.

Though Copilot will remain the default app, the key launches on devices where it’s installed. Users will soon be able to navigate the settings in Windows 11 and remap the key to apps that better suit their needs. This is the first major update to Windows keyboards in 30 years, marking a significant shift in functionality.

Microsoft has been pushing its Copilot AI assistant, integrating it into Windows 11, but the web app version introduced in the recent 24H2 update made some features less valuable. The new customization feature gives users more control, allowing the Copilot key to function more like the traditional Windows key by launching other apps or shortcuts.

The feature is expected to roll out to all Windows 11 users soon. This marks a new era of customization and functionality for the Copilot key, giving users more control over how they use their devices.
