Meta is again tweaking how it labels content created or modified by AI across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. In a significant shift, the company will no longer display the “AI Info” label directly under posts that have been edited or modified using AI tools. Instead, this label will be hidden in the post’s menu, accessible by clicking the three dots above the post.

However, for content fully generated by AI, Meta will continue to prominently display the “AI Info” label below the user’s name. The company will also clarify whether the content was flagged due to industry-shared signals or the user’s self-disclosure.

The update, set to roll out next week, is intended to “better reflect the extent of AI used in content,” according to Meta. However, this subtle repositioning of the AI label for modified content may raise concerns about transparency, as users might not immediately realize that specific posts have been altered using AI tools. With AI editing tools becoming more sophisticated, it could be more challenging for audiences to distinguish between actual and AI-edited content.

Meta’s approach to AI labeling has been controversial before. In July, the company faced criticism for mislabeling authentic AI-generated photos, leading to users’ confusion. In response, Meta changed the label from “Made with AI” to the more neutral “AI Info.”

As AI continues to reshape digital content, Meta’s latest move demonstrates the ongoing challenge of balancing transparency with user experience. Will this change make AI-edited content harder to detect, or is it simply an evolution in how we engage with AI? Only time will tell.
